A burn ban is now in effect in Rockland County as dry conditions continue

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY – County Executive Day has issued a burn ban as severe drought conditions continue in the region.

In response to the ongoing drought and increased fire danger, Rockland County Executive Ed Day has issued a statewide burn ban ordinance. The action was taken in consultation with the Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services in light of warnings from the National Weather Service indicating increased fire danger, according to county officials.

The ban prohibits all outdoor burning activities until further notice, including but not limited to the burning of brush, leaves and other yard debris, as well as fire pits and campfires. Day said the decision was in response to unusually dry conditions that pose a significant risk for rapid ignition and spread of fires due to recent lack of precipitation, low humidity and gusty winds.

“Ensuring the safety of our residents and protecting our natural resources are my top priorities,” Day said. “In these extremely dry conditions, even a small spark could lead to a large and rapidly spreading fire like we just saw in Hillburn over the weekend. We urge everyone to adhere to this ban until sufficient rain falls.”

Exceptions to the ban include firefighting training or firefighting activities approved by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and cooking on a closed grill. Burn ban violations are a Class B misdemeanor and may result in fines and other penalties.

“In light of the recent large mountain bushfire in Hillburn and several other smaller bushfires across the county, a ban on all open fires is necessary at this time. Dry conditions make our open spaces, including residential neighborhoods, incredibly vulnerable to fires,” said Chris Kear, director of the county’s Fire and Emergency Services Department. “By reducing potential ignition sources, we can prevent dangerous situations and protect both life and property.”

The county said it will continue to closely monitor weather conditions and will lift the ban once it is deemed safe. Updates on the burn ban will be posted on the county’s website and social media channels.
