DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — For the first time, Republican Bernie Moreno is ahead of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, according to a poll.

According to an Activote.net poll of 400 likely voters, the Republican challenger is leading the Democratic incumbent by 2.2 percent.

How does the electoral college work?

The poll, conducted locally between August 16 and September 22, has a margin of error of 4.9 percent and suggests Moreno is leading among rural and suburban voters, while Brown is leading among urban voters.

Moreno's lead in the poll comes as the candidate faces fierce backlash over comments he made at a Warren County town hall meeting about women advocating for reproductive rights.

Sadly, by the way, there are many women from the suburbs who say, “Look, abortion is the problem. If I can't have an abortion anytime I want in this country, I'll just choose somebody else.”

OK. It's a little crazy, by the way, but especially for women who are over 50. I'm like, I don't think that's a problem for you.”

A representative of Moreno’s campaign team later said:

Bernie was obviously making a tongue-in-cheek joke about how Sherrod Brown and members of the left-wing media like to pretend that abortion is the only issue that matters to women voters.”

Bernie believes that female voters are just as concerned about the economy, rising prices, crime, and our open southern border as their male voters.
