Albany State's interim president releases a statement after a shooting on campus left one dead and six injured

One person died and six others were injured in a shooting Saturday night during Albany State University's homecoming weekend.

Early Sunday morning, ASU Interim President Dr. Lawrence M. Drake II, a statement regarding the shooting shared with WALB-TV.

WALB-TV reported The shooting occurred on the university's East Campus. Albany Police Chief Michael Persley shared preliminary details with WALB and said there was no motive for the shooting.

At this time, no suspect(s) have been identified, nor have the names of the victims been released.

According to WALB-TV, some victims injured in the incident were treated by emergency responders inside the student union. The station also reported that the shooting itself may have occurred near the student union on campus.

According to WALB-TV, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was working to determine what happened at the scene. Police are expected to hold a press conference with an update on the situation, but a time for that update has not yet been announced.

Drake's statement reads in full:

Dear Ramily,

The Albany State University family is deeply saddened to learn of an incident that occurred on campus on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at approximately 8:50 p.m. As always, the safety of our ASU students, faculty and staff is a priority of this institution.

We're told six people sustained injuries. Unfortunately, one of them was reported deceased. The GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) is leading the investigation and is being assisted by state and local authorities. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Albany State University remains committed to providing resources for the mental, emotional and physical well-being of our campus community. Counseling and other resources are available to students during this time. We encourage our students to use these resources as needed.
