Allison Russell makes Broadway debut in “Hadestown”

Grammy and Juno award-winning folk musician Allison Russell will make her Broadway debut in the musical Hadestown this fall.

The musical was written by singer Anaïs Mitchell and is a version of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in the underworld. Russell, who is currently shortlisted for this year's Polaris Music Prize for her album The Returneewill play the role of the goddess Persephone from November 12th.

Russell, who coincidentally has a song called “Persephone” that appeared on her debut solo album, Children outdoorsspoke on Instagram about her participation in the production: “It is impossible for me to fully express how deeply meaningful, resonant, uplifting, full-circle and EXCITING it is to make my Broadway debut and play the lead role of Persephone (a goddess and archetype I have explored in poems and songs myself since childhood) in this masterpiece of my generation,” she wrote.

“I am proud to join the sisterhood of artists who have embodied Persephone, proud to join this extraordinary ensemble, proud to become part of this living, growing legacy,” she continued. “This is a world I dreamed of and now get to live in. I am excited and eternally grateful to be a part of Hadestown!”

Russell is currently on tour in the US as the opening act for Hozier. After her Broadway performance, a solo tour is planned for 2025.
