BRAINERD – Law enforcement arrested a 35-year-old Brainerd man early Friday, Nov. 1, as a suspect in a shooting and alleged kidnapping of five people from a residence northeast of Brainerd.

At approximately 1:50 a.m., Crow Wing County Sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting on Loerch Road in Maple Grove Township, east of Brainerd. When officers arrived in the area, they found an adult male dead from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Lyle Maske, 62, Brainerd.

Investigators identified Chad Aanerud as a suspect in the shooting. Aanerud allegedly took five people against their will from a residence in the 15000 block of Loerch Road and left the scene in a white 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. The sheriff's office said it believes the shooting and apparent kidnapping are related incidents.

The abductees were a 33-year-old woman and four teenagers aged 14, 11, 7 and 3.

An Amber Alert was sent out around 6:30 a.m. Friday with information about the suspect and vehicle.

At approximately 7:15 a.m., the vehicle was located and stopped by Morrison County law enforcement. Aanerud was taken into custody and the five people were uninjured in the vehicle.

“This is an active investigation and additional details will be released as they become known,” the sheriff’s office reported in a news release.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under the Staff headline. Often the notation “stab” is used when rewriting basic short messages that come from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. Sometimes this byline is used when a news story has multiple authors or when the story is created by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, this will be noted in the story.
