Anna Kendrick looks back on a Halloween trip that went wrong.

Published on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, October 23rd Pitch perfect The star reflected on a 2023 Halloween party with Brittany Snow, where the couple decided to try microdosing mushrooms.

But Kendrick, 39, got more than she bargained for. “We were at this party and someone asked me if I wanted to try microdosing mushrooms. And that's something that people do. And I thought, 'Yeah, you know, I'm kidding.' And that’s how you know you’re having fun when you have to tell a crowd,” Kendrick joked.

The actress then explained what she took, describing it as a “little candy bar” where “everyone takes a square,” noting that she ended up cutting her already small dose in half.

“And that evening I learned that chocolate is not a good transport for mushrooms because sometimes it doesn't mix properly and sometimes a small bite contains not a microdose but a real macrodose. ” she said. “So I'm at this party and it's my first time trying microdosing and I just get so high. And I start to say, 'Oh no, I'm so high. Oh God, I I'm so high.' And I just can't stop saying it.

Luckily, 38-year-old Snow had her co-star behind her. As Kendrick explained, her “hero” friend realized she was “tripping with balls” and decided to pick up “some more mushrooms.”

“So it’s just the two of us sitting in the corner of this party, staring at each other, grinning like the Joker and tearing up. But we felt great,” Kendrick said.

“And I'm like, 'You're so beautiful,' 'No, you're so beautiful,' 'You're so talented,' 'No, you're so talented.'” And she had these little jewels on her face for the party and they blended into the LA skyline,” she added. “I thought, 'You're a creative genius,' and told her to remake the film Chinatown. So those were my big learnings about mushrooms.”

Kendrick, who performed Colbert to promote her directorial debut Woman of the hour — now streaming on Netflix — later joked that her story was for “entertainment purposes only” after host Stephen Colbert asked her if microdosing was legal.

“Learn from my mistakes, kids,” she added. “Don’t do drugs.”

Earlier this month, Kendrick spoke to PEOPLE about her enduring friendships with her costar Pitch perfect Stars said it was “truly amazing how they have remained a part of my life”.

“Honestly, I think I can have a tough shell, and the fact that I was around these women making films for ten years makes me really grateful that they were there just enough to wear me down, I think,” said Kendrick of the 2012 hit and its two sequels – which also starred Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Shelley Regner and Kelley Jakle.

“They are some of the most rewarding relationships in my life, so I'm honestly amazed that they have stayed in my life. I was really lucky,” she added.

Kendrick isn't the first celebrity to share their experience with microdosing or make a joke about it. During a press conference for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in February, Michael Bublé joked with reporters that he took a microdose of mushrooms on the way to Scotiabank Arena in Toronto for the event's mock draft.

“My buddy told me it was just a microdose of mushrooms and he lied,” Bublé said at the time. “Well, I’ll be honest, I thought I was there Blades of Glory I was out there most of the time until it kind of calmed down and then I realized, “Holy shit, I'm at the NHL All-Star Game.”

The Grammy winner was later asked by a reporter if he was actually “on mushrooms on stage” and clarified that it was a joke. “Of course not! I'm sitting here having dinner. I have a problem with bread,” he said.
