Argentina announces squad for World Cup qualifiers in October

Argentina continues its bid to defend its World Cup title with CONMEBOL qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia.

Lionel Scaloni announced his squad for the upcoming games and the return of Lionel Messi stands out. Messi was last seen wearing the Albiceleste jersey in the 2024 Copa América final, where he injured his ankle. Argentina won its second consecutive continental title, but Messi was sidelined for the next two months.

Argentina's captain returned to action in Inter Miami's 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union on September 14. Messi scored a brace and set up the third goal. In doing so, he proved once again that his talent is far from fading, even at 37 years old and after a long absence from the field.

The number one FIFA national team currently sits at the top of the CONMEBOL qualifying table with 18 points, two more than second-placed Colombia. Uruguay, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela complete the top six – the places that grant a direct ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

Argentina visits Venezuela on October 10 at the Estadio Monumental de Maturín and hosts Bolivia on October 15 at the Estadio Monumental of River Plate.

Perhaps the most noticeable name missing from the Argentina squad is goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. Dibu was banned for two games by FIFA for “offensive behavior and breach of the principles of fair play”. The incidents occurred during Argentina's qualifying matches against Chile and Colombia in September.

Argentina celebrated their Copa America title in front of their home fans after beating Chile 3-0 on September 5. Dibu decided to recreate his infamous celebration with the Copa America trophy, which FIFA didn't take too kindly to. After Argentina lost 2-1 to Colombia on September 10, Dibu vented his frustration by hitting a camera aimed at him after the final whistle, putting him further on FIFA's bad side. The incidents earned him a ban, although the AFA said it was “absolutely against FIFA’s decision”.

Sacloni will have to rely on usual substitute Gerónimo Rulli to fill the void left by the Aston Villa goalkeeper. The 2024 Yashin Trophy winner is expected to be back in net for Argentina in November's qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru.
