Autumnal feeling in southwest Virginia

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Cooler, drier air will settle across southwest and central Virginia as high pressure takes control of the region.

Tuesday will start out cooler with morning temperatures in the 40s and lower 50s. Little to no cloud cover is expected for the day, with afternoon temperatures rising fall-like into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Overall, crisp mornings and mild afternoons are planned for the rest of the week. Afternoon high temperatures are generally near average upper 60s and 70s with abundant sunshine.

Mostly clear skies, light winds and low humidity lead to radiative cooling during the night hours. Morning lows will be in the 40s and upper 30s. Spotty frost is possible west of the Blue Ridge.

Slightly warmer conditions are forecast again for the weekend, but the dry and calm weather will remain. Highs will be in the 70s and lower 80s. A cooldown is scheduled for Monday.

On the trail of the tropics

Hurricane Milton is a dangerously strong storm. At its peak on Monday, Milton produced maximum sustained winds of up to 180 mph. Fluctuations in intensity are expected, but Milton is likely to remain a major landfalling hurricane.

Milton will travel east across the Gulf of Mexico over the next few days. Landfall is expected along Florida's western Gulf Coast late Wednesday into Thursday morning. Milton will cross the Sunshine State and sail across the Atlantic Ocean at the end of the week.
