Bernie Sanders is calling for a reckoning in the Democratic Party

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders minced no words in a scathing statement on Wednesday.

“It should come as no surprise that a Democratic Party that has failed the working class is finding that the working class has failed them,” said Sanders, Vermont’s senior senator.

“First it was the white working class, and now it’s Latino and black workers too,” Sanders said.

Sanders won re-election to a fourth term on Tuesday. He cited wealth inequality, declining living standards in the U.S., a lack of comprehensive health care guarantees and support for Israel's recent military campaigns as issues Democrats need to focus on. Sanders' 2016 presidential run was a key factor in pushing the dialogue in the Democratic Party to the left.

Sanders has built his political career outside the Democratic Party – and often criticized it – but in the Senate he caucuses with Democrats.
