Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick believes the team has lost out on Josh Uche transfer. Belichick explained why the pass rusher's departure to the Kansas City Chiefs did not benefit the Patriots.

Belichick shared his analysis of the trade on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday.

“The Patriots probably should have gotten more for him,” Belichick said.

Uche was traded to the Chiefs on Monday for a 2026 sixth-round pick. Belichick believes New England could have released him in return for at least a sixth-round pick; Therefore, trading him to the Chiefs for a 2026 sixth-round pick was not the right move.

According to Belichick, had the Patriots made the most of the trade, the team could have received much more from Kansas City than just a sixth-round pick.

“Uche has the end of his contract this year, he will be a free agent. If they don’t sign him, they’ll get a comp pick, which will probably be a sixth pick anyway,” Belichick said. “Look, Josh Uche is a really good rusher. He didn't get a chance to rush much for the Patriots this year because they trailed by a lot. The situation was not good. But he had a big year for two years.”

Belichick said Uche should help the Chiefs as a solid pass rusher. Belichick drafted Uche in 2020 and coached the linebacker for four seasons.

“Now he (Matthew) had Judon on his other side, so it was two good pass rushers. But he will have plenty of opportunities to pounce in Kansas City. I think it will really help them. That's him.” He has surprising power for his size and some flexibility in coverage. I think this is a good addition to a team that anyone can do. He will definitely help them.

Belichick's candid advice about trading with his former team is no surprise considering the back-and-forth comments between him and current Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo.

Mayo called Belichick's team “soft” last week, which caused a stir in the media, especially since Belichick is considered one of the NFL's best former coaches.

It's likely that Belichick will continue to voice his opinion on the Patriots as the season progresses.
