Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic: UEFA Champions League – BBC Sport

After winning nine of nine this season – including an impressive 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava on matchday one – confidence flowed through this Celtic side before what Rodgers described as a “trial by fire”.

Celtic have only won away from home twice in the Champions League, never in 14 attempts on German soil. It never looked like it would end here.

Beatings from Europe's top players have become an unfortunate habit for Celtic in recent years and this beating will come alongside similar beatings from the likes of Real and Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Paris St-Germain.

This Celtic team should be different and have found a solid defense to match the attacking prowess they have shown this season.

With their defensive lynchpin, Cameron Carter-Vickers, missing, it was always going to be a tall order to tame a Dortmund team that looked like it was going to score every time it burst forward.

Without Liam Scales' final interventions and Schmeichel's fine saves, Celtic's record European Cup defeat of 7-0 could have been broken.

Sometimes you have to accept that the opposition are just above it, but Rodgers will be frustrated by the unforced errors that have compounded Celtic's problems.

This was always going to be Celtic's toughest test and they fell miserably short. Now the challenge is to find something much closer to their best for the remaining Champions League games.
