Eagles win back-and-forth game in annual Red Bandanna Game



CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts. – Boston College defeated Michigan State 23-19 in the annual Red Bandanna Game on Saturday night in front of 44,500 spectators at sold-out Alumni Stadium.

Lewis Bond 42-yard touchdown reception from Thomas Castellanos 1:28 before the end – followed by Max Tucker's A game-winning interception in the end zone with 42 seconds left was the deciding factor in a back-and-forth game. With the win, Boston College is now 3-1 this season.

Castellanos finished the night completing 10 of 16 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, and also gained 15 yards on the ground. Treshaun Ward carried the ball 14 times for 102 yards and one score, while Bond led all receivers with six catches for 102 yards, including the opening score.

Michigan State scored three points on its first drive of the night, covering 26 yards in nine plays and setting up a 41-yard field goal nine minutes before the end of the first quarter. Boston College penetrated deep into Spartans territory, but a fumble at MSU's nine-yard line stopped the potential scoring drive.

Richard found the end zone on the Eagles' next drive and ran for his first collegiate touchdown, 11 yards, to make it 6-3 with 12.5 minutes left in the second quarter. The run capped an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes on the clock. MSU answered with a touchdown on the next drive to take a 10-6 lead with 8:10 left in the second quarter.

by Carter Davis recorded his first career interception as the Spartans advanced into Eagles territory. With 3:15 left in the half, he intercepted a pass from MSU's Aidan Chiles at the BC 22. The Spartans scored a field goal and ended the half with a 13-6 lead.

The Eagles came out of the locker room and started to play. The special teams forced a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half and recovered the ball deep in Spartans territory. Luca Lombardo scored a 39-yard field goal and reduced the score to 13-9 with 12:35 minutes left in the third quarter. In the next series Amari Jackson recorded BC's second interception of the night, giving the Eagles the ball at the MSU 36.

One play and eight seconds later, Ward ran 36 yards for the score, giving the Eagles a 16-13 lead with 12:20 left in the quarter. MSU's Jonathan Kim tied the score at 16-16 with a 51-yard run with 9:06 left in the third quarter.

Kim struck again with 4:12 left, scoring from 27 yards out to give Michigan State a 19-16 lead. The MSU offense lasted 9:24 on 18 plays and totaled 89 yards. But the connection between Castellanos and Bond paid off on the next drive, as the duo accounted for 55 of the 75 yards of the scoring series, capped by a 42-yard pass with 1:28 left in regulation that gave BC a 23-19 lead.

With 36 seconds left, Tucker caught BC’s third interception of the night – this time in MSU’s end zone.

Came Arnold recorded the most tackles of the game with nine, including five solo stops. Donovan Ezeiruaku recorded eight tackles – two solo and 2.5 for loss, including one sack. Cam Horsley made seven stops – two with a loss and Daveon Crouch recorded six tackles. Three Eagles – Tucker, Davis and Jackson – each intercepted a pass.

Every year, Boston College honors Welles Crowther '99 with its annual Red Bandanna Game. The red bandana was an identifying feature of Crowther, who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Crowther, known to survivors as “The Man with the Red Bandana,” is believed to have rescued at least a dozen people from the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

Crowther played lacrosse at BC and worked as a stock trader in New York on the 104th floor of the South Tower after graduating. BC began its Red Bandanna Game tradition in 2014 with a 37-31 win over No. 9 USC. The Eagles have an overall record of 5-6 in Red Bandanna Games.

Boston College will play at home again next week on September 28th against Western Kentucky. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the ACC Network.
