Bruce showed up – and how.

Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park on Saturday, September 14. The Pony show was an after-party for the Sea Hear Now Festival and Springsteen performed with the Tangiers Blues Band, including Danny Clinch, Robert Randolph and Jake Clemons.

The Boss played about half an hour of R&B rock classics, including “Lucille,” “Down The Road Apiece,” and “Boom Boom.” The Ocean Avenue Stompers were on horns.

“I was speechless,” said Stan Goldstein, co-author of “Rock & Roll Tour of the Jersey Shore.” “He had a show in Baltimore (Friday, Sept. 13) and tomorrow he has a show here (at Sea Hear Now with the E Street Band) and he's 74. He looked great. It looked like it was 40 years ago when he played on the Stone Pony stage. He had that smile he always had when he played years ago.”

Springsteen also filmed a salute to the Stone Pony's 50th anniversary on Saturday, which was posted on the Pony's social media channels. The Pony opened in February 1974.

“Here I am back where it all began – how can this happen?” said Springsteen. “Happy 50th anniversary, Stone Pony – you did it! It's a miracle you're still here, but I'm glad you are. Love to all!”

Springsteen has performed at the Pony hundreds of times, but has performed rarely in recent years. His last public appearance was inside at an Alejandro Escovedo concert in 2010.

The Boss played with Garry Tallent and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes outside on the Stage Pony Summer Stage next to the club in 2019.

“Who would have thought that 50 years later, Bruce Springsteen would still be on stage at the Stone Pony,” said Goldstein.

Springsteen and the E Street Band will play the Surf Stage at North Beach on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Singer-songwriter Noah Kahan headlined the Sea Hear Now show on Saturday and also played at the Pony after-party.

“I'm headlining the same festival as Bruce Springsteen – it's crazy!” Kahan said Saturday from the Sea Hear Now stage. “I try to dress like him. That's a lot of denim to take in at once. Take your time getting used to it. Your eyes will eventually get used to this outfit.”

Kahan wore jeans and a jacket with many – and colorful – patches.

The Gaslight Anthem, Trey Anastasio Band, Black Crowes, Norah Jones, 311, Revivalists, Kool & The Gang, Hives and more will play the festival's three stages at North Beach and Bradley Park over the two days.

Clinch, a native of Toms River, is a co-founder of the festival and has photographed several of Springsteen's album covers.
