Bruins' Jim Montgomery has a clear message for Fabian Lysell

Bruins talent Fabian Lysell will play his second preseason game when the Black and Gold host the Washington Capitals at TD Garden on Tuesday night.

Lysell is considered a candidate for Boston's roster, but the 21-year-old forward failed to fire a single shot on goal in 14:56 minutes of ice time in the Bruins' preseason loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday. Lysell's shot went wide in the third period and another was blocked by Rangers defenseman Victor Mancini. The Swedish native scored one goal but also had two turnovers in the loss.

Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery admitted he doesn't know Lysell well enough to expect a slow start from the young player, but said he expects more from him on the ice.

“He's got to do a little bit more than he's done so far if he's going to make it to the Bruins,” Montgomery told reporters after warmups at Warrior Ice Arena on Tuesday, according to a video provided by the team. “That would be the case for most of the guys who played (Sunday) night.”

Against the Capitals, Lysell is expected to play on the right wing with center Jaxon Nelson and left wing Riley Tufte.

Both Bruins player development coordinator Adam McQuaid and Providence coach Ryan Mougenel said at development camp in July that they believe Lysell has made great strides in his development and could “make a case” for a job in the NHL. He just needs to show Montgomery he can compete at the NHL level.
