Bruins lose to Rangers in exhibition game in New York

NEW YORK — Maybe they should have played this play off-Broadway.

The Bruins and Blueshirts battled through 60 minutes of hockey on Thursday night, with the Rangers earning a 5-2 victory at Madison Square Garden in a game that felt a lot, well, like a preseason game.

With many of the diehards watching the Giants down the street, the building billed as “the most famous arena in the world” lacked energy. It seeped down to the product on the ice.

It should start on Friday when Jelly Roll rolls into town.

“I didn’t think we were particularly physical,” coach Jim Montgomery said. “I don’t think there’s a lot of emotion in our group. I felt like we started the game well and at the end we had a five-on-three system and I don't think we responded well after that.”

New York got goals in the first half from some of its usual suspects: Adam Fox (on a five-on-three), Chris Kreider (blocking a point kick) and Brennan Othmann (great individual effort on a breakaway) and the Bruins never really looked in sync out of.

“Just a good move from him,” said Bruins goalie Brandon Bussi (28 saves). “The fact that with two minutes to go in the first round it is 1-1 and we are 1-3 in the locker room is all the more disappointing. I have to find a way to finish it and keep it a 1-1 game.”

The other goals for New York were scored by Jonny Brodzinski and Adam Edstrom (empty net player).

Boston's goals came courtesy of Brett Harrison (nice, sweeping finish off a Morgan Geekie feed) and Mark Kastelic (redirecting a Drew Bavaro blue-line bomb).
