Bullet passes through window in second floor classroom at Nova High School in Seattle

Nova High School was on lockdown and Garfield High School was in emergency shelter after Seattle police responded to shots fired near both schools Thursday afternoon.

According to the Seattle Police Department, officers responded near Nova High School in the 2400 block of East Cherry Street at 1:44 p.m. According to police, a .45-caliber bullet went through a second-floor window at the school. SPD told KOMO News that the bullet will be recovered as evidence.

A department spokesman said a 911 caller reported hearing six to seven shots fired. Responding officers found more than a dozen shell casings on 25th Avenue near the school.

A witness also told emergency dispatch that two vehicles were allegedly seen fleeing the area. Investigators believe the vehicles were involved in the shooting.

It is currently unknown whether the shots were aimed at the school. No injuries have been reported at this time.

“Students and staff at both schools are safe and the lockdown and shelter-in-place orders have been lifted,” Seattle Public Schools wrote in response to a query from KOMO News.

Both Nova and Garfield high schools were placed on lockdown following the shooting, but the lockdown has since been lifted.
