CFB Betting: The group of five underdogs for the week is Old Dominion +6 at Coastal Carolina

Good news. If you waited to bet on last week's Underdog of the Week in Group of Five, then you've probably cashed in.

I picked Northern Illinois as the G5 underdog of the week with a +7 against North Carolina State. The line shifted and college football betting odds had NIU as an eight-point underdog heading into Friday and heading into kickoff.

I'm surprised the Huskies made up the difference as they kept making things difficult for themselves by calling penalties and turning the ball over. This included a scoop and score and another fumble recovered at the NIU 1-yard line. The Huskies' offense gave up more points than their defense.

Instead of a victory we get a kick-off. Things could be worse.

Here is this week's selection.

Old Dominion (Spread +6, Moneyline +180) on the Carolina coast

With 23 G5 teams having a bye this week, there aren't many great options to choose from for this week's G5 underdog. Still, I think ODU will have a great opportunity here to completely turn the tide of their season.

Coastal Carolina has not impressed so far. Sure, the Chanticleers are 3-1, but they had a loose schedule and escaped with an eight-point win over Temple. Two weeks ago, they trailed by 27 points at home against Virginia before losing by 19 points.

On the other hand, the Monarchs had a tough schedule and nearly beat South Carolina, which lost to LSU by a field goal, and topped Kentucky, which just beat Ole Miss. ODU was 0-3 and was on the verge of being 0-4 before finding a way to beat Bowling Green last week, taking the lead with a drive late in the fourth quarter.

That win, along with freshman quarterback Colton Joseph, breathed new life into ODU. I think the Monarchs now have the potential to pick up some wins in conference play. Joseph replaced starter Grant Wilson, who is dealing with a wrist injury, in the second half and led the Monarchs on the winning drive. It was one of the best possessions for ODU's offense all season.

While the offense wasn't great, ODU's defense was mostly solid. CCU scored a combined 95 points in the first two games, albeit against weak defenses. I like that ODU is letting CCU stagnate this week and forcing quarterback Ethan Vasko to make some bad throws, which we saw a lot against Virginia.

Since last year, ODU is 6-2 against teams on the road as underdogs and went 4-0 ATS in road games in the Sun Belt last season.

I don't like that Coastal is coming off a bye and this is ODU's second straight road trip, but the Monarchs are eager to turn their season around.

Nevada (+6.5, +260) at San Jose State

Both teams have performed better than expected under their first-year head coaches. San Jose State was close to beating Washington State and could easily be 4-0. Nevada is 2-3 with two of its losses coming to Power Four programs.

Dual-threat quarterback Brendon Lewis should cause some problems for the SJSU defense here as the Wolf Pack tries to keep up with the Spartans' potent attack. I think Nevada head coach Jeff Choate will have some answers to at least contain this SJSU offense.

The Wolf Pack rebounded under Choate and came prepared in every game. I like that they stay so close in their first Mountain West contest.

App status (+3, +125) at Marshall

The Mountaineers have had a tough few weeks, dealing with a big loss to South Alabama and the effects of Hurricane Helene.

I think the Mountaineers will find a way to bounce back and play a close game against Marshall. A win could bring joy to many area fans, and I think the Mountaineers will play for them.

Charlotte (+9, +260) vs. East Carolina

The 49ers are used to playing in the underdog role and seemed to have embraced that under second-year head coach Biff Poggi. Last year too, they were underdogs in all but two games. They went 8-7 against the spread in those matchups.

ECU seems to enjoy playing in close games this year and could have another close matchup on the road.
