Champions League: Barcelona loses in Monaco, Leverkusen beats Feyenoord | Champions League

Barcelona made a disappointing start to the Champions League and suffered a 1-2 defeat against Monaco after suffering an early setback with the sending off of Eric García.

García received a red card in the eleventh minute for a foul on Monaco's Takumi Minamino, who was free in front of the goal after a bad pass from Marc-André ter Stegen, the visitors' goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, the hosts took the lead when Maghnes Akliouche fired a low shot into the net, but Lamine Yamal equalised in the 28th minute with a shot from the edge of the box.

Monaco continued to press and were rewarded in the 71st minute when substitute George Ilenikhena fired past ter Stegen to secure victory in their first main stage appearance in Europe's elite club competition in five years.

Bayer Leverkusen opened their Champions League season with a clear 4-0 win at Feyenoordwhich raged in the first half. Florian Wirtz scored two goals, while Alejandro Grimaldo also got on the scoresheet and Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther scored an own goal. At half-time, the home team was booed and chased off the pitch by their own fans.

Leverkusen were ahead in the first five minutes when Wirtz capitalised on a defensive error by Ramiz Zerrouki. Jeremie Frimpong then set up the next two goals with his strong running play down the right flank. Grimaldo scored the first in the 30th minute with the help of a clever no-look pass from Victor Boniface and he scored the next with a precise cross to the far post which Wirtz converted unchallenged in the 36th minute.

Leverkusen took a four-goal lead just before half-time. A free kick landed at the far post for central defender Edmond Tapsoba, whose header into the danger zone back into the line of fire hit Wellenreuther's foot and slowly rebounded over the line, resulting in an own goal.

While the home team showed more fighting spirit and energy in the second half, they rarely threatened to score. Leverkusen came close to adding a fifth goal in stoppage time, but David Hancko cleared a shot from Aleix García off the line.

A late header from defender José María Giménez equalised Atletico Madrid a 2-1 victory over RB Leipzigalthough the guests took a surprise lead in the fourth minute after a quick counterattack with a header from Benjamin Sesko.

Antoine Griezmann equalised in the 28th minute with a beautiful volley into the top corner. Atlético dominated the match with 20 shots on goal, but it wasn't until the 90th minute that they finally managed to score the winning goal when Giménez headed in a cross from Griezmann.

Brest won their first game in a European competition, goals from Hugo Magnetti and Abdallah Sima secured a 2-1 victory over Storm Graz in Brittany.

Magnetti scored Brest's first European goal in the 23rd minute, expertly controlling the ball with his chest before volleying it into the bottom corner to break the deadlock. However, Sturm Graz equalised just before half-time when Brest's Edimilson Fernandes inadvertently put the ball into his own net.

Brest were more aggressive after the break and were rewarded when Sima restored France's lead in the 56th minute, skilfully evading his marker and scoring with his left foot. Towards the end of the match, Sturm Graz were down to ten men after Dimitri Lavalee received his second booking for a foul on Magnetti.

A lucky goal by winger Kerem Akturkoglu and a great free kick by his Turkish compatriot Orkun Kokcu ensured Benfica a 2-1 victory at Red Star Belgrade.

Akturkoglu opened the scoring for the Portuguese in the ninth minute, finishing a close-range cross at the far post. A minute before half-time, Kökcü doubled the lead with a precisely placed free kick from around 25 meters that narrowly hit the top right corner of the net.

Red Star managed to pull back four minutes from time when Felício Milson was set free and scored from close range, but they were unable to equalise.
