CNN's Jake Tapper shocked by independents' “wild” swing for Trump in Georgia

CNN anchor Jake Tapper was stunned by a shocking election poll Tuesday that showed former President Donald Trump well ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris among independent voters in Georgia.

“Independent voters — they make up 31% of the electorate there,” noted CNN political analyst David Chalian — before revealing that Trump is “winning them by 11 points” in the swing state of Georgia.

CNN's exit poll showed Trump received the support of 54% of independents in the Peach State, compared to 43% support for Harris.

Chalian pointed out that Joe Biden won independents in Georgia by a 9-point margin in the 2020 election, suggesting a 20-point swing in Trump's favor this time.

“Wow,” Tapper said of the exit polls. “This is really significant.

“We’re seeing some incremental changes here and there,” Tapper continued. “When it comes to young voters, (Harris) does a little better, whites without a college degree (where Trump is) does a little better, but this independent swing is wild.”

CNN's Chris Wallace, who suggested earlier in the evening that Harris would need “a miracle” to win against Trump given the election polls, struggled to understand how the former president was able to win over so many independents.

“I’m trying to figure out why,” Wallace said, noting that he “didn’t know how you would explain it.”

Trump leads Harris 52.3% to 47% in the vote count, according to the Associated Press.

State courts extended voting times in several precincts because of bomb threats that disrupted operations and could now delay the final count.

The state has 16 deciding electoral college votes to cast.

Biden's narrow victory of 0.23 percentage points in Georgia in 2020 was the first time a Democratic presidential candidate won the state since 1992.
