Davante Adams trade request: Jets will be interested, but what are their chances?

The Raiders remained steadfast throughout the offseason: They were not interested in trading Davante Adams, despite the constant rumors. Adams did his best to dispel the rumors as well, including one sparked by former Packers teammate and current Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who said he was looking forward to playing with Adams “again.”

But even though the Raiders and Adams denied that they would be willing to trade him, it always felt like that could change quickly if the Raiders struggled to start the season.

And now here we are, Las Vegas is 2-2, Adams is telling the team he “prefers” to be traded, according to multiple reports, and the Raiders are telling other teams they're willing to trade him at the right price ?

So where do the Jets stand and what are their chances of landing him?

A trade would make sense for the Jets for several reasons, but the main reasons are clear: Rodgers has repeatedly identified Adams as his favorite target of all time, and Adams said in the offseason that if he were traded, he would be open to a reunion with Rodgers — which is all understandable since the two racked up more than 8,000 yards and 70 touchdowns in eight seasons together in Green Bay.

So there is clearly a desire from Rodgers and Adams to make this happen. And while adding another wide receiver isn't the biggest priority right now for a Jets team that has a No. 1 in Garrett Wilson, an ever-improving Mike Williams and a solid third receiver, with Allen Lazard looking more of the type, who they thought they were Adams would undoubtedly help them if they signed in 2023 – especially when it comes to pushing Wilson on defense with a cornerback and a safety, which led to a slow start to the season has

So what is the delay? Compensation. According to ESPN, the Raiders are “seeking a package that includes a second-round pick and additional compensation.”

That would be a steep price for the Jets, especially since there's no guarantee they could keep him after 2024, when they need to rework his contract (which no longer includes guaranteed money), which will most certainly mean a pay cut.

The Jets can afford to pay the price since they have two third-round picks in next year's draft thanks to a draft week trade with the Lions in April.

There's also the real question of Adams' 2024 salary.

If the Jets were to trade for Adams today, they would owe him $13.1 million prorated of his $16.9 million base salary. Of course, that number drops every week (by $938,333, to be exact). So the closer we get to the trade deadline, the more affordable a trade becomes – it also becomes harder for the Raiders to demand more compensation, as every week that passes without Adams being traded diminishes the impact he has as a “rental.” team can achieve for a new player.

In the end it will come down to money and compensation. Is there another team out there that wants Adams more than the Jets and is willing to give up more in return? That could certainly be the case, although Adams is showing signs of slowing down slightly as his 32nd birthday approaches in December.

But the bigger question is whether Woody Johnson will be willing to spend the money necessary to sign Adams, especially considering the Jets are already paying Williams and Lazard more than $15 million this season.

That remains to be seen, but given the Jets' unwillingness to negotiate with Haason Reddick, who they already have under contract, this is far from a lock, even if it appears the Jets are the most likely landing spot.
