The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued a mandatory Stage 3 fire restriction for all of New Jersey.

Officials are urging the public to adhere to major restrictions as extremely dry conditions are expected to continue across the country.

The mandatory statewide Level 3 fire restrictions prohibit all outdoor open fires that use wood or charcoal, as well as the use of kerosene or gas torches of any kind. According to the Department of Environmental Protection press release, only fires with an elevated stove containing propane are permitted , natural gas or electricity is used.

“We are currently experiencing some of the driest conditions anywhere, making our forests, particularly the vast Pinelands region of southern New Jersey, particularly vulnerable to wildfires that could spread very quickly and endanger property,” said Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette Press release.

The fire ban is in effect on all public lands and private property in all communities throughout the state, the Department of Environmental Protection press release said.

“It is critically important that the public take extra care in fire safety and not use open flames,” LaTourette said.

New Jersey's Stage 3 Fire Restrictions

  • All fires in forested areas are prohibited unless contained in an elevated furnace using only propane, natural gas, gas or electricity.
  • No charcoal fires are permitted.

These fire restrictions follow a statewide drought warning as environmental officials urged residents to conserve water due to the dry weather months of September and October across the state.
