Election 2024: Harris campaigns in Texas while Trump travels to Michigan

Several Republican volunteers in one of Ohio's most critical swing districts spoke about what issues matter most to them and why they believe former President Trump will continue his recent success in the swing state.

“What really motivates me is sitting around and listening to what's happening with our country, with the economy, with the really bad inflation and with our wages dropping 20% in the last four years,” says Charlie Pengov, a lifelong veteran Toledo resident Derek Merrin, who volunteers for the GOP House candidate, told Fox News Digital. “Instead, I was taught that if these things make you feel anxious, you should get involved and do something.”

Although Ohio's long history as a swing state was recently undermined after former President Trump won the state by 8 points in 2020 and is expected to do even better in 2024, the race between Merrin and incumbent Democrat Marcy Kaptur is taking place in Toledo Ohio instead of the 9th Congressional District, which is considered an important swing district.

“The most important thing I hear from family members is the economy, that’s the most important thing,” Pengov said. “Inflation has simply stolen everyone's savings that they had, or sometimes it's even difficult for some people to buy food week after week. You know, that’s really the biggest problem.”

“Definitely the economy,” Kelly, a volunteer from Merrin who was born and raised in Toledo before moving to Arizona to escape “Democratic politics,” told Fox News Digital.

“Things like food, food prices, gas prices, housing, everything has increased so much in the last few years that it has become really unaffordable for everyone.”
