ESPN's BPI predicts every game on West Virginia's basketball schedule

1 minute, 38 seconds Read

A new West Virginia basketball season is upon us and the Mountaineers are staying under the radar, largely due to a new coaching staff and roster.

Expectations are low for Darian DeVries in his first year on the job, but the Mountaineers have some high-profile talent they acquired through the transfer portal, including his son Tucker. Former Oklahoma State point guard Javon Small will lead the offense and has already proven he is a premier player in this league. Sencire Harris and Toby Okani will add length to the defense, which should help make up for West Virginia's lack of size.

If you're a big fan of computer projections, you might want to look away. According to the ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI) matchup prediction, the Mountaineers are in for a very long season.

On Saturday morning, the BPI released West Virginia's winning percentage in 29 of its 31 games. Of course, the only two games not featured are the two that will take place in Battle 4 Atlantis, where the opponents in the tournament will be determined.

In the 29 games for which data was provided, the BPI favored West Virginia in just 10 of the 29 matchups. If Big 12 percentages hold true, the Mountaineers would be 3-17 in conference play.
