Dateline Consequence After the Halloween party revolves around the mysterious disappearance of 44-year-old Karen Swift on the night of October 30, 2011. The incident occurred in Dyersburg, Tennessee, when the entire town was busy with Halloween celebrations.

The next day, Karen's car was found abandoned on a country road next to her two broken cell phones, which were lying near a neighbor's house. The local police immediately filed a missing person report. However, the initial suspicion that Karen was missing was proven to be murder after her body was discovered six weeks later.

Karen was found dead, entangled in vines, near Bledsoe Cemetery in Dyer County. The case lasted over a decade, but no arrests had been made as of 2022. On August 8, 2022, police finally arrested David Swift (Karen's husband) for first-degree premeditated murder.

Dateline Correspondent Keith Morrison has been covering the case as the episode airs today. The official summary of the Dateline NBC Consequence is:

“After a Halloween party, a wife and mother of four disappears. A decade later, a private investigator claims to have uncovered frightening new clues that are turning the city upside down. “Keith Morrison reports Friday, November 1st at 9/8c on NBC.”

She suddenly went missing during the celebrations and her car was found abandoned on the side of the road the next day. Her two damaged phones were also recovered near her neighbor's apartment.

A missing person case was filed and search operations began immediately. However, the police were unable to gather any clues. Six weeks later, Karen's body was found tangled in vines near Bledsoe Cemetery in Dyer County.

Karen's husband David Swift was arrested on August 8, 2022 for first degree murder. David and Karen's 20-year-old daughter Ashley was shocked by the developments in the case.

The trial began on May 28, 2024, almost after eleven quiet years of investigation. The public prosecutor portrayed the incident as the result of a problematic marriage. Three weeks before her disappearance, Karen had filed for divorce. The couple separated and divorced back in 2000, but remarried the same year after significant reconciliation. Furthermore, on the day of her disappearance, she rejected David's conciliatory offer of dinner.

There was evidence that Karen wanted to leave David when she filed for divorce. The prosecutor also alleged that in the final days of their marriage, David spied on his wife and tried to control their relationship.

How has Karen's new circle of friends changed her behavior?

Multiple statements from Karen's family and friends indicated that she had been seen with a new group of friends shortly before her murder. Karen spent time with them at Farms Golf Club in Dyersburg.

Her relatives said she drank and went to parties quite often. Over time, Karen became reserved with her family and did not spend much time with her children. A friend of David's named Kim Greene reportedly said in a statement:

“Karen’s behavior changed with this new group. She was determined to be out and have fun with them instead of staying home with the kids where she belonged…David just wanted to see where his wife was.”

Was David eventually found guilty of his wife's murder?

On June 6, 2024, a Weakley County jury found David not guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder. It was also announced that no new trial would be initiated against him on the same charges. However, due to a stalemate among the jury, the judge declared the trial invalid.

When statements from Kelly Essman, who married David in 2016, were received as part of the investigation, it was concluded that David had been pursuing Kelly long after their separation. In 2023, he was even charged with stalking but later pleaded no contest. Despite all the accusations, David's confidants over the years have portrayed him as a kind, gentle and good person.

Additionally, the Tennessee Court of Appeals rejected a request from David's defense to drop charges of murdering his wife. But it only paved the way for a new trial for involuntary manslaughter. The mystery surrounding Karen's death has yet to be solved as her family and loved ones await justice.

NBC's Dateline Consequence After the Halloween party will reveal more details about the Karen Swift murder investigation.
