Five LSU players will have great performances against the Arkansas Razorbacks

Five LSU players will have great performances against the Arkansas Razorbacks

3 minutes, 9 seconds Read

This weekend, LSU heads into a hostile environment to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Battle for the Shoe. Although Arkansas is unranked, they are a dangerous team, as they showed by beating Tennessee two weeks ago. The Razorbacks have a strong defense and an incredible running game on offense that is difficult to overcome. If LSU wins this weekend, it will be because these five players are putting on great performances.

Trey'Dez Green – Wide Receiver

In the past, we've expressed the opinion that tight end Trey'Dez Green should be more involved in the passing attack, but now that he's a wide receiver, he certainly will be. With Green, LSU is in for a matchup nightmare, as he is faster than players with the size that could slow him down, while also being taller than any defensive back who can keep up with him. His 6-foot-10 frame will be a great target for Garrett Nussmeier in the red zone, where LSU has struggled scoring this season.

Caden Durham – Running Back

Against Ole Miss, Caden Durham didn't look as effective as he has this season, rushing for 37 yards on 3.1 yards per carry while also catching three passes for 11 yards. This could be due to his foot injury suffered against South Alabama or the talent of Ole Miss' defense. This weekend, against a strong Arkansas defense, LSU will need to be able to run the ball effectively to keep the defense honest against the pass.

This defense gave Ollie Gordon II and Jarquez Hunter trouble, but Dylan Sampson was effective on the ground. The Tigers will need the big-play ability that Durham showed in this game or the offense will look like it did against Ole Miss, which will put LSU in trouble.

Severe burns – safety

As the LSU defense gets into shape, veteran safety Major Burns is a player who looks better in his role. The Ole Miss game was the best of Burns' season as he made a splash with eight tackles, four of which were solo, one tackle for a loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. This Arkansas team can get to the edges with its jet sweeps and read options, and one player responsible for slowing the Hogs is Major Burns. If LSU uses Burns as a spy for Taylen Green, he will need to limit the damage in any altercations to ensure LSU isn't cornered for big gains.

Whit Weeks – Linebacker

After his best performance with the Purple and Gold last weekend with 18 tackles, Whit Weeks looks set to have a big impact again this weekend. The Razorbacks will look to establish the run, and a player like Weeks who can blow up any game in a loss will have a big impact on how this game turns out. In the passing attack, Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green loves to take off, so LSU may use Weeks as a spy for Green. When Green takes off, Weeks will be tasked with limiting what Green does with his legs.

Sai'Vion Jones – Edge Rusher

LSU's defensive front has seen significant improvement this season, thanks in part to great performances from Bradyn Swinson. The edge rusher is now a player that teams game plan around, meaning Swinson will be facing double teams with tight ends and running backs in the passing game. If Arkansas is to help against Bradyn Swinson, Sai'Vion Jones will have to fill in for the Tigers.

Through six games, Jones ranks second on the team with 4.5 sacks, and with more one-on-one duels against Arkansas, he should be able to increase that number. Setting the edge will also be important for LSU when it comes to slowing down the Razorbacks' running game, as they love to get their playmakers to the edge.
