Freeman, whose sprained right ankle kept him out of Games 4 and 6 of the NLCS, played hero Friday with a 10th-inning blast that gave the Dodgers a 6-3 win and opened the series.

“It felt like nothing, just kind of floating,” said Freeman, who dedicated the Grand Slam to his father. “These are the kinds of things when you're five years old playing Wiffleball in the backyard with your two older brothers, these are the scenarios you dream about – two outs, bases occupied in a World Series game.” That it actually happens and If we hit a home run and put the ball up 1-0, that’s the best thing right away.”

Freeman is seeking his first World Series victory as a member of the Dodgers, with whom he signed a six-year, $162 million contract in March 2022 after winning a title with the Braves in 2021.

It's been a trying year for Freeman and his family. Over the summer, their three-year-old son Maximus was diagnosed with a rare condition called Guillain-Barré syndrome, which resulted in “full-body paralysis.”

He was hospitalized in early August and spent eight days in the pediatric intensive care unit before being discharged.

Chelsea, who has been married to Freeman since 2014, provided an encouraging update in mid-August.

“We have seen great progress in the last week and a half. Max sleeps most of the night through the night again. He sits without help and has even started crawling in the army in the last few days. Our lives consist of doctor’s appointments, physical therapy and lots of time in the pool,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

Earlier this month, Chelsea – who also has sons Frederick and Brandon with Freeman – told her Instagram followers that Max's neurologist was “very pleased” with his progress.

“With the help of a lot of PT, Max is getting closer and closer to his normal wild self. “Thank you again to everyone for your prayers and good wishes for our family,” she shared on October 10.

Game 3 of the World Series begins Monday at 8:08 p.m. at Yankee Stadium.
