Freeze warning for Jefferson County for Thursday

0 minutes, 56 seconds Read

The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, effective for Jefferson County between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday.

The weather service says: “Frost formation occurs at temperatures up to 35 degrees.”

“Frost could damage sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants can die if they are not covered,” explains the weather service. “Take steps now to protect sensitive plants from the cold.”

What to do if there is a frost warning?

Frost warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds and sky cover favor frost development. This is most likely when the temperature is 36 degrees or less. In some cases, the frost is severe enough to end the growing season and is then referred to as a “killing frost.”

According to the weather service, if your area is under a frost warning, cover sensitive plants before the sun goes down to retain heat near the plants, or bring plants indoors overnight if possible.
