Gonzaga's father Ben Gregg wore two hats — and possibly multiple logos — during Wednesday's matchup against Warner Pacific

As of last weekend, Matt Gregg hadn't made a final decision about his gameday wardrobe for Wednesday's preseason clash between Gonzaga and Warner Pacific.

Gregg, who has close ties to both universities – his middle son Ben plays for one while the other employs him as athletic director – was still considering the options while watching Gonzaga's charity contest against USC in Palm Desert, California.

Gonzaga above and Warner Pacific below? Warner Pacific sweatshirt and Gonzaga sweatpants? Something completely different?

“I said to my wife, 'Can you make a kind of half shirt?' said Gregg. “I’ll have both on.”

Gregg may wear a customized singles jersey with both schools' logos and sit in either the McCarthey Athletic Center section designated for Gonzaga parents or in the section reserved for WPU fans on the road when the Division I Bulldogs and NAIA Knights of Portland play tip-off at 6 p.m

As Ben Gregg entered his fifth and final year of play, Matt went to great lengths in the offseason to get Wednesday's game on the schedule, including multiple phone calls and text messages to Jorge Sanz, a Gonzaga assistant and director of basketball operations, who many Games oversees the team's planning efforts.

“I've been reaching out to Jorge for months to try to make this happen and the thing is, they've been trying to put together all these other, bigger games the whole time and we've been like a backbone,” Matt Gregg said. “Then he went to Spain, I think he got sick and I was like, 'Dude, are we playing or what?' Anyway, in the end it was like, “Okay, stop bothering me.” ”

Wednesday's performance won't count on either school's win-loss record, but both should be worth 40 minutes of pacing the court before their respective seasons begin next week.

Gonzaga, which lost 96-93 to USC in its first test against another opponent, will use this as another opportunity to look at different lineups and experiment with different schemes and defensive strategies. The Zags open the season on Monday against No. 8 Baylor – a game that not only counts for their win-loss record but could also play a role in NCAA Tournament seeding in the next few months.

Warner Pacific, which skipped its first two preseason exhibition games – both against Division II Alaska Anchorage – will be compensated for its trip to Spokane and players will have the opportunity to experience an authentic Kennel experience by using the world-class facilities from GU to facing an experienced Zags team that was ranked sixth in the preseason AP Top 25.

Matt Gregg helped coordinate a preseason exhibition between the teams ahead of the 2022-23 season – Gonzaga won 101-70 – and called to see if the Zags could help with another favor, promising Sanz none additional voicemails would be received from the WPU athletes offices after Ben graduated from Gonzaga.

“I told (Sanz) that at the beginning,” Matt said. “This is his last year, I won’t bother you about it anymore. We will not ask you to play with you again.

“If you need an emergency response team, we are, but I won't ask you again after this year.”

Ben Gregg has been training at WPU's home gym since he was 6 years old, his father estimates, and the Zags trained there while competing at the Moda Center during the 2022 NCAA Tournament. While home in Portland, Gregg participates in summer runs with WPU players and is familiar with the Knights' roster, which returns leading scorer Matt Solomon (18.6 points per game) from a group that went 5-23 , but won three of their last four games to conclude the 2023-24 season.

Meanwhile, Matt Gregg is preparing for a busy winter. He and his wife, Kori, traveled to Southern California for Saturday's contest against USC and will be in Spokane on Wednesday before Matt joins the WPU women's team for Friday's contest against Oregon in Eugene. Matt, a former WPU women's coach, has a longstanding relationship with Ducks coach Kelly Graves and took one of his teams to an exhibition in Spokane when Graves was still coaching at Gonzaga.

The Greggs will be back in Spokane for Monday's opening game against Baylor at the Arena and are planning trips to the Bahamas, New York City and Los Angeles for Ben's final college season.

“It's funny because we were at a restaurant on the way to the airport and I showed my wife the new hype video and she started crying and I was like, 'What's wrong?' said Matt. “I think it will be like this this year. And I said, ‘What are you doing on Senior Night crying over a hype video?’ So it was pretty funny.”
