CLARKSBURG, W.Va (WDTV) – Tuesday is Election Day and Harrison County Schools will seek to renew its district levy that has been in effect for 70 years. The principal says the levy is the backbone of the district.

“It provides us with everything from classroom materials, textbooks to everything a child needs to get to school. We're not asking it to send anything, so that's the most important thing, it also provides additional funding for our facilities to keep us safe. “The facilities are running well,” Harrison County Schools Superintendent Dora Stutler said.

Harrison County Schools is seeking more than $34 million. The school system wants everyone to know that the levy is not a tax increase

“Tax revenue has increased, which continually increases the funds flowing into the school system, so we were able to reduce the tax rate by 7.5% because revenue is increasing all around us,” Stutler said.

This is the first time the levy has been on the general election ballot. The ticket needs 50 plus + 1 percent of the vote to be approved. The district insists that failing the levy would be a disaster for its more than 9,000 students.

“It would be huge, I hope the citizens pass it like they have for the last 70 years. If not, we really need to go back and look at our numbers to tighten things up and make some decisions,” Stutler said.
