I-5 SB opened after a 45-car pileup in Kent caused a massive backup

On October 27, 18 tow trucks were called to help clear accident scenes on I-5 South south of SR-516 in Kent.

By afternoon the reserve was five miles long and growing. Road crews had to bring in sand to clean up oil and gas spills from the many cars involved.

FOX 13 reporter Dave Detling went to the scene to speak with drivers about the cause of the crashes and how they were helped as crews worked to clear the road. He says some people were taken to hospital, but none with life-threatening injuries.

Transportation authorities urged people to avoid driving in the area and take alternative routes while road crews work to clear accident scenes. Official detours occurred along the SR-516 exit.

This I-5 backup came as a landslide in the Bellingham area on October 27 also caused miles of backups on I-5 North.
