IND vs. BDESH 2024/25, IND vs. BAN 2nd test match report, September 27th – October 1st, 2024

innings Bangladesh 233 (Mominul 107*, Bumrah 3-50, Akash Deep 2-43, Ashwin 2-45) vs India

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj moved quickly through the lower order after lunch as Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 about 45 minutes after lunch on the fourth day. They lost their last four wickets for just 28 runs – with Ravindra Jadeja taking his 300th Test wicket – leaving Mominul Haque on 107. Bumrah finished the game with three wickets, with each of the Indian bowlers taking at least one.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz hit three fours in seven balls against Bumrah – two of them thanks to the width on offer. But Bumrah got his revenge when he flicked a ball inwards from a long distance and ripped it off. Mehidy had to play and slipped slightly. In his next over, Bumrah hit Taijul Islam for pace while Siraj Hasan Mahmud did the same to trap him.

By the time Jadeja dismissed the last batsman to reach his bowling peak, Bangladesh had lost 7 for 126, losing any advantage they had hoped for.

The morning session was all about the tug of war between a defiant Mominul and the disciplined Indian bowlers. Play resumed after two days of cancellation due to rain and India struck three times in the extended morning session.

As the sun set after several days of cloudy weather, the pitch showed signs of improving carrying capacity, but the natural nature of the black earth surface meant some deliveries remained a little low. Akash Deep and Bumrah started the day by mostly hitting the area around a good length – for varying degrees of lift – testing Mominul and Mushfiqur Rahim's patience. Four of the first five overs of the day were maidens, with the only run scored via Mushfiqur's inside edge.

Bumrah then got an in-ducker to rebound more and take Mushfiqur's inside edge again, but this time past leg stump for the first four of the day. It landed about a good length outside the dough and, as reported in the broadcast, deviated 2cm into the dough. On the very next ball, Bumrah worked his magic, landing the ball in exactly the same spot and making sure it moved in sharply – 6cm per throw. Mushfiqur decided to leave the ball due to the behavior of the previous delivery but was stunned when the ball touched the off-stump and ended his stay.

Litton Das entered the game ahead of Shakib Al Hasan, perhaps to maintain the left-right batting combination. Rohit Sharma was on the attack for most of the first session, with three slips and two slips being a familiar sight against the fast bowlers. This also gave the batters enough gaps to hit fours, as Litton did three times in a Bumrah over and Mominul did once each against Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj. Mominul, who had moved up to number three with a two-drop in the previous game, scored a solid half-century.

However, Litton's adventurous spirit ended in his downfall when he charged at a long ball from Siraj and hit it out of the air into the wide middle of the field where Rohit timed his jump perfectly to score a one-handed ball. Shakib's stay in the middle then lasted all 17 balls, his attempt to use his feet against R Ashwin proving to be his undoing. He could have gotten away with it if Siraj hadn't backed out from mid-off and held on to a one-handed catch while falling backwards.

Jadeja came on as a substitute in the 12th over of the day but was never allowed to make an impact. Mominul liked to try and sweep it as often as possible and also made good use of his feet, throwing it straight over the nineties and going into the nineties with a six. Then he got a few lives, first when Rishabh Pant failed to hold on to an under-edge feather on 93, and then on 95 when Virat Kohli dropped him after diving to the left from a wide first slip was.

Fittingly, it was the win that helped Mominul reach a 13th Test century, his first since June 2023 and only his second away from home. He had scored the most runs scored by Bangladesh that day but fell by the wayside in the end.
