A spectacular seven-wicket win from Mitchell Santner helped New Zealand beat India by 156 before the tourists reached 85-2 at tea on day two of the second Test in Pune on Friday and asserted their control of the three-match series consolidated.

Tom Latham batted on 37 and Rachin Ravindra was unbeaten on seven as the Black Caps, who won the opening game by eight wickets, extended their lead to 188 runs at the break after scoring 259 runs in the first innings.

Washington Sundar sent back Devon Conway for 17 while Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Will Young for 23 but the runs came too easily for New Zealand, who are aiming for a strong total to boost their chances of a first series win in India.

India are seeking their 19th consecutive home win since a 2-1 defeat to England in 2012 but will have to work hard to catch up with New Zealand ahead of the final in Mumbai early next month.

Santner had earlier scored a career-best 7-53 while Glenn Phillips took 2-26 as the spin bowlers continued to produce excellent performances at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium where Washington scored 7-59 on the first day.

The hosts went ahead 16-1 after losing captain Rohit Sharma to a nine-ball duck and Shubman Gill was lucky to survive a loud call for lbw from Santner on the third ball of the morning when he was on 10 was.

After missing the opening defeat in Bengaluru due to a stiff neck, Gill was back in the side, shaking off the early scares and going on the attack, throwing up paceman Tim Southee for a six.

Santner trapped Gill just ahead for 30 and the left-armer struck again, bowling out Virat Kohli with an inviting full-toss for one that the batsman missed completely as two quick strikes rocked India.

Yashasvi Jaiswal drove and swept the bowlers and seemed much more relaxed at the other end, although the left-hander was lucky to be on 16 when his slog sweep off Ajaz Patel fell into no man's land.

Daryl Mitchell made a sharp catch at slip as Phillips dismissed Jaiswal for 30 and the tourists could have scored another if the fielder had had a difficult chance when Santner edged off Sarfaraz Khan's blade.

Rishabh Pant was dismissed by Phillips for 18 after a miss and Santner left Sarfaraz with 11 to leave India at 95-6 and both batting heroes from the opening game back in the dugout.

Santner caught Ashwin lbw for four and removed Ravindra Jadeja in similar fashion after the batsman made a defiant 38 before managing one to go through the Akash Deep defense.

He then caught Jasprit Bumrah for a duck to ensure New Zealand would start their second innings with a 103-run lead, so India needed a big bowling performance to stop the game slipping away further.
