Disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein called Donald Trump his “closest friend” in author Michael Wolff's latest recordings.

Wolff began releasing tapes of interviews he recorded while writing his book “Fire and Fury” on Thursday. The book covered the first months of the Trump administration.

As part of this research, he spoke several times with Trump's long-time friend Jeffrey Epstein, who at that time only had charges in the state of Florida in one case of solicitation of prostitution and one case of solicitation of prostitution of persons under the age of 18. Epstein served 18 months on those charges as part of a release program, leaving prison during the day and returning at night.

Wolff interviewed Epstein in 2016, years before the financier's controversial suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

In the latest Wolff recording, released Saturday evening, Epstein said Trump was his “closest friend in 10 years.” Epstein claimed that Trump was both “charming” and “a terrible person.”

“He’s charming; He has the ability to persuade people,” Epstein said on tape. “It’s very similar to Clinton. Both Bill and Donald have the ability to walk up to a fat, ugly woman and say, “You're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.” So he tells everyone what they want to hear. And that’s adorable.”

Wolff claimed that Epstein spoke to him because he was horrified that the Trump he knew so well had come to power.

“He does bad things to his best friends, his best friends’ wives,” Epstein said on tape. “Anyone who first tries to gain their trust and then uses it to do bad things.”

Wolff also asked about Trump's intelligence information.

“When it comes to real estate deals, he’s brilliant. He is a salesman. He’s very knowledgeable about real estate,” Epstein said. “He doesn’t know anything other than that. No story, no strategy…he can’t read a spreadsheet, which is funny.”

The Daily Beast reached out to Trump's camp for comment on the tapes. They described the recordings as “false slander” and “election interference.”
