Thulasendrapuram in Tamil Nadu is the ancestral village of Kamala's maternal grandfather, PV Gopalan, who was a civil servant in the British government. Her mother Shyamala was Gopalan's daughter. Kamala's maternal grandfather, Gopalan, was born in this village before moving to Chennai.

The village came into the spotlight in August 2020 when Kamala was nominated as the Democratic vice presidential candidate and celebrated her victory that same year.

On Tuesday, a special 'Abhishekam' made of sandalwood and turmeric and a special 'Archana' were performed at a temple in Kamala Harris' ancestral village as villagers prayed for her victory.

The battle for the top spot had left a deeply polarized nation whose divisions only widened during a closely contested race between the two candidates. Throughout the campaign, Harris urged Americans to come together but also warned that a second Trump term would threaten the foundations of American democracy. She also predicted that the election should protect the country's fundamental freedoms, protect constitutional values and ensure women's rights.

Harris has also sought to assemble a broader but challenging coalition of liberal Democrats, independents and disaffected moderate Republicans, calling Trump too dangerous to be elected.

For many Harris supporters, her promise to protect abortion rights after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 ruling that recognized a constitutional right to the procedure was the most compelling reason to vote for the Democratic vice president.

She advocated for protecting reproductive rights, an issue that has galvanized women since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a nationwide right to abortion in 2022.

However, despite intense and intensive campaigning to catch up after Biden's late withdrawal from the elections, Kamala failed to influence the votes in any of the swing states across the country and ultimately lost the White House to Trump, who will begin his second term as President of the United States States of America.
