FRIDLEY, Minn. – Years after Krispy Kreme disappeared from Minnesota following a much-hyped opening raid, the donut chain plans to return to the state.

According to Fridley City Council, the company has filed a building permit for a location at 5696 University Avenue. The permit has not yet been approved but is expected to be issued by the end of the month, the city said.

Krispy Kreme plans to open the store in late spring or early summer next year, officials said.

Minnesota hasn't had a Krispy Kreme store since 2008. That hasn't stopped donut diners from getting their money's worth, though – in 2019, enterprising college student Jayson Gonzalez began driving to Iowa to pick up Krispy Kreme donuts and bring them back to Minnesota for resale. The company initially demanded that Gonzalez be stopped The donut is running, but later reverse course and even donated to his company after an outcry on social media.

McDonald's announced the launch at the beginning of the year Selling Krispy Kreme donuts. While the initial launch is limited to Kentucky and Indiana, the fast food chain plans to sell the pastry nationwide by the end of 2026.

“The most common request we receive from consumers every day is, 'Please bring Krispy Kreme to my city,'” Krispy Kreme CEO Charlesworth said in a statement about the McDonald's deal.

Krispy Kreme currently has more than 300 locations nationwide.
