La Nina causes a wet, cold winter in New York after hurricanes

Weather officials say La Nina is responsible for more hurricanes this year. Now it will have an impact on the upcoming winter in New York.

Last summer, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted that La Nina would cause above-average hurricane activity in the Atlantic this year.

La Nina caused more hurricanes

“The above-normal forecast is based on forecast La Niña activity in the Pacific, weakening wind shear and increasing atmospheric instability, resulting in optimal hurricane conditions,” NOAA explained in its forecast.

The 2024 hurricane season began in June and lasts until November.

I don't have to tell you it was a terrible summer and fall for Hurricanes. Southeast communities continue to recover from recent hurricanes Helene and Milton.

So what does La Nina mean for New York this coming winter?

According to the National Weather Service, there is at least a 60 percent chance of La Nina developing in the United States in November and no later than March.

Forbes looked at the National Weather Service's La Nina data and reported that New Yorkers and our neighbors to the Northeast should prepare for “cool, wet weather” with “above average precipitation.”

The Farmer's Almanac also predicts that the coming New York winter will be “wet” and cold thanks to La Nina.
