Liverpool 1st, Amorim must improve Man Utd…

Liverpool have made a fast start to the 2024-25 Premier League, while Manchester United have significantly underperformed – and the xG table shows why.

The Expected Goals (xG) metric uses a complex algorithm to determine the quality of chances each team has created and conceded this season. This gives us a useful tool to measure how good their performance actually was, regardless of the outcome.

Under Arne Slot's management, Liverpool have scored more expected goals and conceded the fewest goals of any Premier League team. This is in direct comparison to United, whose difficulties in both boxes are reflected in their low position.

Otherwise, Fulham are surprisingly in second place and have six points less than they deserve according to the xG table.

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham are performing well, but perhaps Mikel Arteta is worried about Arsenal's weak defense and Newcastle's mediocre start reflects their average xG yield.

In the end, the difficulties of the three promoted teams are no surprise, while according to these statistics Gary O'Neil's Wolves should have five points more than in reality but would still be deep in the relegation battle.

With data from Understat, here are the tables in terms of expected goals, expected goals conceded and expected points so far this season.
