The Premier League champions once again crashed out of a competition they had previously dominated, while a resurgent Spurs held on

When Manchester City faced Tottenham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, Pep Guardiola brought in several youth and fringe players, and although this included plenty of experience and quality, his side were the second best team, losing 2-2. 1 in north London.

Tottenham took the lead with just six minutes. Archie Gray's pass into the channel found Brennan Johnson, who flicked the ball forward and allowed Dejan Kulusevski to run away. The Swede stormed to the baseline and crossed low to Timo Werner, who passed Stefan Ortega.

Midway through the first half the guests were two behind. After a simple corner kick, Kulusevski found Pape Matar Sarr on the edge of the penalty area and curled the shot from 25 meters away at the near post.

City's first chance came just before half-time when Matheus Nunes ran along the outside of Gray and fired a teasing cross through the six-yard box that went just past the toes of Phil Foden. However, in the final minute of first-half stoppage time, City grabbed a lifeline when Savinho powered past Destiny Udogie and Nunes hit a fine cross into the backcourt.

Tottenham should have been out of sight on the other side of the break when Dominic Solanke turned away from two City defenders and sent Werner through to Ortega, but he directed his ball wide and his weak shot whistled past the far post. Minutes later, Ortega threw a strong hand to deny Kulusevski as he also made a clear shot on goal.

Guardiola's men were in great danger of being dealt a knockout blow in the final 10 minutes, with Josko Gvardiol notably throwing the ball straight to Richarlison, who somehow confused his lines as he hit Ortega from close range.

City had one last chance, which came when Guglielmo Vicario flapped from a corner and the loose ball fell kindly to Nico O'Reilly, but the youngster's shot was saved off the line by Yves Bissouma and the hosts held on for six minutes through extra time for victory.
