Here's a recent football story from the AP:

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — New Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim says the English club rejected his request to take over at the end of this season, telling him: “It's now or never.”

Amorim will leave Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese champions, to take charge of United on November 11, replacing Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday.

Just hours after being confirmed as United's next manager, Amorim held an emotionally charged press conference following Sporting's 5-1 win over Estrela da Amadora on Friday. He explained in detail the background to what he described as a life-changing decision.

Amorim said he always planned for this to be his last season at Sporting – he has coached the team since 2020 – and he changed his mind “many times” about the decision he should make after United expressed their interest.

“The only thing I wanted was that it should be at the end of the season,” said Amorim, “and they said no, that wasn't possible, it was now or never, and if not, they would find another one View option.”

“I had three days to make a decision that would radically change my life. And that’s what I did.”

Amorim said United were not the first club to offer to pay the release clause in their Sporting contract.

“I had other offers but I didn’t want them and I accepted this one, so I made my decision,” he said.

“People say it’s about the money, but there was another team that wanted to sign me and they paid three times more than Manchester (United).”

Amorim said he had the “best time of my life” at Sporting, where he won the Portuguese championship twice in four full seasons, and he “felt the anger and disappointment of some fans” during the game against Estrela, in which he seemed close to tears at one point.

“I understand that they (Sporting's fans) are hurt,” he said, “but we have to move on, time heals all wounds.”

Amorim said he would take his Sporting backline to United but promised not to sign Sporting players in the January transfer window.

He had yet to speak to any United players, he said, and declined to speak in detail about United until he joined the team on November 11.

Before that, he will take charge of two more Sporting games – against Manchester City in the Champions League and against Braga in the Portuguese league.

Amorim's first game with United is away to Ipswich in the Premier League on November 24th.
