6 minutes, 30 seconds Read

The New York Mets are in the MLB playoffs. They punched their ticket with a wild 8-7 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader and will play when the wild-card round begins Tuesday.

The two games were postponed last week because of Hurricane Helene, which caused some chaos in the MLB playoffs ahead of the start of the Wild Card Series on Tuesday.

With the Mets winning Game 1 and securing their spot in the postseason, the Braves must win Game 2 to also get in. If they split the doubleheader, both are in and the Diamondbacks are out. To break it down a little further…

  • Atlanta is there with a win. The Braves can only be the No. 5 seed.

  • new York comes in with a win. If the Mets win on a Monday, they are a No. 6 seed. If they win both, they are a No. 5 seed.

  • Arizona comes in if either Atlanta or New York sweep the doubleheader. The D-Backs can only be the No. 6 seed.

  • The Braves lost in the third period 1-2-3

Joey Lucchesi retired all three Atlanta hitters he faced in the 3rd inning with two strikeouts.

    Braves 1, Mets 0

  • Grant Holmes continues to hum

Grant Holmes pitched 3 innings without allowing a hit or run. He has six strikeouts on 34 pitches.

  • Mets escape 2nd inning allowing just one run

The Braves looked like they could have a big inning. After taking a 1-0 lead through Gio Urshela, Joey Lucchesi went to Sean Murphy.

But with two runners and one out, Lucchesi gets Orlando Arcia to step out and take out Michael Harris II and limit the damage.

  • The Braves take a 1-0 lead

Jorge Soler led off the 2nd inning with a double. Two batters later, Gio Urshela drove him with a single to left field.

    Braves 1, Mets 0

  • The definition of “emergency start”

Grant Holmes had virtually no time to think about starting the second game, which the Braves desperately need to win. Half an hour before the start of the game he was informed that he would be in the starting eleven.

  • More details about Chris Sale

    Via Mark Bowman of MLB.com:

The start against the Reds was on September 19th. Sale pitched five innings, allowing two runs and five hits.

  • Scoreless 2nd inning for Grant Holmes

Grant Holmes got through the 2nd inning in 10 pitches, creating another hitless, scoreless frame. He may not be Chris Sale, but his first two innings were very good.

  • 1st inning: Mets 0, Braves 0

Matt Olson bats with Marcell Ozuna at first base.

Joey Lucchesi pitched a scoreless, hitless 1st inning for the Mets.

  • Marcell Ozuna runs on 7 pitches

The Braves could have a lot going on in the 1st as Marcell Ozuna draws a walk and brings Matt Olson to the plate with two outs.

  • Atlanta's score is 1-2-3 in the first inning

Good start for Grant Holmes, who struck out the first three Mets batters. He struck out Luisangel Acuna and Brandon Nimmo.

Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies and Marcell Ozuna start for the Braves against Joey Lucchesi.

Albies went 2-for-3 with a home run and 5 RBI in Game 1.

  • How we got here

If you were there for Game 2 of this doubleheader between the Mets and Braves, New York won a thrilling Game 1 8-7.

Atlanta made it 7-6 in the 9th inning, but Francisco Lindor's 2-run home run put the Mets back on top and staying.

  • Diamondbacks and their fans are Mets fans tonight

A Mets win in Game 2 would eliminate the Braves and place the Diamondbacks as the NL's No. 6 seed in the postseason.

  • Grant Holmes will start for Braves in Game 2, replacing Chris Sale

Rookie Grant Holmes gets the starting job in Game 2, which the Braves must win. Entering Monday, he posted a 3.78 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings in 25 appearances (six starts).

Holmes pitched 1 2/3 innings and threw 21 pitches on Sunday, so he's likely just an opener for Atlanta in a bullpen game.

  • Chris Sale wins the National League and lifts the Triple Crown after being ejected in Game 2

With the Braves' season on the line, Chris Sale was waived for Game 2.

On the bright side, Sale will win the National League pitching Triple Crown with a 2.38 ERA, 18 wins and 225 strikeouts for the season. He is the first NL pitcher to do so since 2011, when Clayton Kershaw led the league in the three major categories.

With Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal winning the AL Triple Crown, it also marks the first time since 2011 that pitchers from both leagues have won the Triple Crown in the same season.

  • It's over! Mets win 8-7 and go to the postseason!

It was an unlikely back-and-forth game, but the Mets managed to emerge victorious after trailing 3-0 early in the 8th inning.

This game featured two separate comebacks and two separate key home runs. Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run homer in the 8th and Francisco Lindor hit a two-run homer in the 9th to retake the lead for the Mets.

  • Diaz is trying to secure the Mets' postseason berth

The Mets are just three outs away from securing the 11th postseason berth in Mets history.

Despite his problems in the 8th game, Diaz is out in the 9th game. And after one pitch, he's having a rash when Matt Olson shows up.

  • You can't keep the Mets down! Lindo smashes the 2-run homer!

Francisco Lindor may have single-handedly saved the Mets from a Game 2 attempt. He smashed a massive two-run home run (his 33rd of the year) to give the Mets an 8-7 lead. Is this game real?

  • Braves take the lead!

Diaz almost walked the second batter in a row on four pitches, but with the score 3-0, Ozzie Albies doubled and cleared the bases loaded. The Braves regain the lead 7:6!

  • Now Diaz loads the bases…

Diaz could melt down. After failing to cover first base, he walks the next batter on four pitches.

  • Edwin Diaz allows a run after failing to cover first base

Diaz makes an untimely and potentially tragic mistake by failing to cover first base after a quick grounder that could have been an out. A run scores, but the Mets still lead 6-4. The difference? Nimmo's two-track jack. Without that, the Mets will be in even more trouble than they are now.
