In one of the final moments against USC on Saturday at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, the Michigan football team was missing one of its best players.

Cornerback Will Johnson went to the locker room with a staff member during a timeout early in the fourth quarter when the Wolverines led 20-17. Johnson was the catalyst for Michigan's biggest play of the second half when he jumped a hitch route for a pick-6, putting Michigan ahead 20-10. According to the CBS broadcast, Johnson was on his way to the X-ray room.

Johnson, a unanimous first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and one of the best defensive backs in college football, has been a consistent force behind Michigan's defense. The junior set a school record with his third interception return for a touchdown on Saturday and now has nine career interceptions.

After his touchdown, he played briefly in the drive before leaving the game again and going to the locker room.

The Wolverines were already without their top pass catcher Colston Loveland, who was sidelined before the game after leaving last week's win early due to injury.

Michigan looks to begin its defense of the Big Ten title with a win over a new conference opponent. Michigan is 1-0 at home against top-15 teams this season after losing to Texas two weeks ago.
