Michigan football tight end Colston Loveland caught a third-and-8 pass while trailing Oregon 31-17 and started the fourth quarter right in front of head coach Sherrone Moore, but the play was declared incomplete .

The fans at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor booed, but Moore then disputed the call on the field. Although Loveland got a foot down on the punt, he did not survive the ground as the ball bounced as it hit the sideline around the Michigan 36-yard line.

After a quick check, the call was confirmed on the scene, prompting longtime CBS color commentator Gary Danielson to remark:

“This is simply a mistake by the Michigan team. They don’t know the rule and it cost them a timeout.”

“They just don’t understand the rule.”

Michigan lost a crucial timeout and stumbled to two touchdowns with 14:49 left, and there was only one timeout because there were too many men on the field.

Danielson also said that someone in the Michigan press box “upstairs” should have told Moore not to challenge after watching the replay.

The Wolverines' defense stepped up to force a punt, giving Michigan another set of downs with 12:23 remaining. The Wolverines drove to the Ducks' 10-yard line but were stopped on downs after a failed trick play on a throwback to backup quarterback Alex Orji with 7:24 left.

“I just thought Davis Warren deserved the throw,” Danielson said. “He didn’t make it on third down (Kalel Mulling’s 2-yard run). And I thought the way he played, he earned either the throw on third down or the throw on fourth down. That’s my opinion.”

“I agree with you,” play-by-play partner Brad Nessler said.

In the third quarter, Michigan committed a penalty over the long snapper in an unusual punt formation, giving the Ducks an automatic first down. Later in the drive, he suffered a second down, was substituted on defense and was caught with too many men on the field.

“This one was really on the coaching staff, that was a bad decision to make a change there,” Danielson said.

Oregon scored a field goal on the way to making it 31-17.
