Minneapolis police are unsure if shots were fired during the afternoon standoff

A man is in custody after reports of shots fired at a residence in the Loring Park neighborhood of Minneapolis.

What we know

According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, officers responded to 911 calls reporting shots fired from an apartment at E. Grant Street and 1st Avenue South around 3 p.m. When they arrived, police heard noises that resembled gunshots. Residents were evacuated and a SWAT team was called to the scene.

During the incident, the man inside began breaking through the wall of his apartment and throwing debris out a window.

Negotiators and SWAT officers made contact with the man, eventually distracting him and using a Taser before taking him into custody.

What we don't know

Police are unsure whether shots were actually fired during the incident.

So far, officers have not found a weapon or ballistic evidence.

The man was also not identified by the police; he was taken to hospital with minor injuries. According to police, he injured himself while destroying his apartment. They say the man has a history of mental illness.

Police are waiting for a search warrant to conduct a full search of the apartment.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
