Moisés Caicedo's dream goal earns Chelsea a draw at Manchester United | Premier League

It feels like a collector's item now – a Manchester United goal in the Premier League. And when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 70th minute, there was huge celebration. Especially from Ruud van Nistelrooy, United's interim manager, who is keeping the dugout warm for Rúben Amorim, who will take over next Monday.

Van Nistelrooy clenched his fists, ran down the line, jumped up and punched the air. It was an emotional outburst because there had been so much disappointment in United's performance. It was only the team's ninth goal this league season – in their tenth game. A remarkable level of waste was one of the themes of her season; one of the many drivers in the death of Erik ten Hag.

The tour would only last four minutes. Chelsea deserved something, especially based on their first-half performance, and they got it when the game's best player, Moisés Caicedo, caught a volley beautifully on the edge of the box from a half-cleared corner. His shot hit the bottom corner, André Onana was powerless.

There were chances on both sides after that, Fernandes missed a chance at the very end, but the draw was about right. That left United with 12 points, their lowest tally after 10 league games since 1986/87, the season in which Sir Alex Ferguson took charge on November 6.

Amorim has had a major build-up and extensive coverage since last Monday that makes him look like the greatest young manager of all time. United – and everyone associated with them – are only concerned with drama and extremes. The hope of what is to come is frightening for the club's fans.

Again, it was up to Van Nistelrooy to take charge of the second of his four games as interim champion, and it was always going to be a bigger challenge than Wednesday's Carabao Cup game against Leicester. Chelsea arrived with confidence, with Enzo Maresca returning to his starting XI after rotating them all in the Carabao Cup exit at Newcastle. The team was assembled for Cole Palmer and he was prominent as usual.

There was a reason Palmer was looking for space inside left; to get close to Casemiro and exploit the United midfielder's lack of mobility. It was a loose pass from Casemiro that Palmer almost capitalized on early on as Caicedo stepped forward to win the ball and feed it. Palmer was denied by solid one-on-one defense from Matthijs de Ligt.

Chelsea were the better team in the first half, had more cohesion until the third period of the game, Caicedo was excellent. Their big chance was Noni Madueke's header from a Palmer corner in the 15th minute. With Wesley Fofana also free behind him, Madueke aligned his body to head against the post. Was Fofana better positioned? On the rebound, Lisandro Martínez hit Levi Colwill. Chelsea wanted a penalty. It would have been a generous award.

Chelsea's pressing caused United a few problems, particularly when Onana caused Casemiro into trouble, Caicedo rose to the challenge and watched the ball fly over the crossbar. However, Chelsea's general threat didn't translate into many clear-cut chances before the break.

United wanted to win the ball and make quick transitions, looking for Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford. There were too many times where they either missed their passes or didn't move the ball quickly enough. In general, they fought for options.

United had chances in the first half, two big ones, the first in the 24th halfTh minute when Rasmus Højlund delivered a low cross from the left on the counterattack and Rashford let the ball run to Garnacho. He stepped in only to shoot tamely. Shortly before half-time, Fernandes crossed to Rashford, who fired a volley off the top of the bar from a difficult angle.

Pedro Neto ran at Diogo Dalot after the break and shot low past the far post, but the ball was increasingly error-filled and grueling. When Garnacho missed a golden chance after a cutback from Fernandes and parried the shot with his right foot, it was easy to wonder where the goal would come from.

Højlund fought bravely, desperately trying to escape the physical attention of Fofana and Colwill. Eventually he did, eluding the former to control a cross from Casemiro, and if the touch took him away from goal, he was rewarded when Robert Sánchez flew off his line and caught his ankle with his gloves. Fernandes sent Sánchez the wrong way.

Game over? No chance. For this United team, chaos usually ensues in the final stages. After the equalizer, Chelsea substitute Enzo Fernández almost made it 2-1 after chipping too high following a mistake in the United defense.

United came back, Garnacho shot past the far post and missed a side-footed volley too high. It wasn't his day. Fernandes almost had the final say, managing to win the ball inside the penalty area only to send the volley into the Stretford End. It suited much of United's season.
