Citing listeria concerns, Dollar General, Target, Walmart and over a dozen other national chains will remove frozen waffles from their shelves following a voluntary recall published by the manufacturer Treehouse Foods.

Listeria was detected during routine testing at the production facility. According to a recent statement from the company, as of October 18, there have been no confirmed reports of illness related to the recalled products.

In the press release, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers to check their freezers for the products listed in the recall and discard them or return the recalled product to the place of purchase for credit. Anyone with questions may contact the company at 800-596-2903, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (CST), the release said.

Listeria, scientific name Listeria monocytogenes, is “an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA says on its website.

“Healthy individuals may only experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” the website says. “Listeria monocytogenes Infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.”
