In Pune, the 86-year-old rainfall record was broken in less than 3 hours

On Wednesday, Shivajinagar broke its 86-year-old September rainfall record. The IMD station recorded 131 mm of rain. Most of the rain fell within a three-hour window from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The final 24-hour rainfall total from 8.30 am Wednesday to 8.30 am Thursday is expected to exceed 132.3 mm, the absolute September maximum recorded in 1938.

SD Sanap, a scientist at IMD, explained that the combination of heat, moisture from the Arabian Sea and a cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh led to the formation of high cumulonimbus clouds around 3 pm. The intense rainfall over a short period of time resulted in significant waterlogging and traffic disruption. Due to the forecast of more heavy rains, all schools and colleges in Shivajinagar and Pimpri-Chinchwad will remain closed on Thursday.
