My 5 new favorite films on Netflix in November 2024

Netflix has confirmed its slate of new films for November 2024 and as expected, the streaming service is adding a large handful of new films. While not every new entry is a winner (yes, I see you, The Scorpion King), there are still some new Netflix films that warrant a spot on your watchlist.

My favorite of the group is definitely “Whiplash”. This masterful drama is one of the most celebrated films of the 21st century and deserves every ounce of praise. Directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Miles Teller and JK Simmons (who won one). Oscar for now-iconic supporting performance), it is a must-see, even for those who have seen it before.

Other titles not to be missed include a tearjerker from Darren Aronofsky and a new crime musical that could play a big role in the upcoming awards season. These are the new Netflix movies you simply can't miss in November 2024.

“Whiplash” is one of the best films of the last decade, and I don’t say that lightly. This captivating drama is set in the world of jazz orchestra and yet manages to raise the standard even beyond many action films. Director Damien Chazelle has created an electrifying film that is gripping in the truest sense of the word. Thanks to a standout performance from JK Simmons and a strong lead performance from Miles Teller, “Whiplash” holds you like a vice.

Andrew Neiman (Teller) is a young jazz drummer at the renowned Shaffer Conservatory in New York. When he is invited to join the school's top studio band, he quickly finds himself in a fight with the group's ruthless teacher, Terence Fletcher (Simmons). As Andrew becomes fixated on winning Terence's approval (a task that may simply be impossible), he crosses dangerous lines into obsession and reaches the edge of his sanity.

“Fast Five” (2011)

Say what you will about the Fast & Furious franchise, but it's pretty darn impressive that it's broken through in its fifth installment. Most series that make it this far are running on steam, but Fast Five was the nitro-fuel boost this action saga needed. And while subsequent sequels would desperately try to capture the magic of Fast Five, none have succeeded. Even though it's over-the-top in almost every way, there's a real purity to this action film, and director Justin Lin has managed to create the series' best ever stunts, too.

Picking up where the lackluster Fast & Furious left off, Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) are still on the run. Now in Rio de Janeiro, they get a chance at freedom if they can complete a seemingly impossible mission. Assembling an elite team of thieves, hackers and drivers, they plan a daring heist to steal $100 million from a corrupt businessman, but a federal agent (Dwayne Johnson) is hot on their trail.

“The Whale” (2022)

I had heard good things about Brendan Fraser's performance in The Whale before I had the chance to see it for myself. I've always been wary of going into a film with too much pre-release hype as it can lead to disappointment, but despite what I'd heard, I wasn't prepared for Fraser's soulful portrayal of a morbidly obese man who… locked himself away from society. By the end of the film, I was clearly convinced of his transformation.

This reclusive online teacher named Charlie (Fraser) suffers from various mental health issues, but what really draws you into the drama is his relationship with his daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink). Ellie is angry at her father for abandoning her as a child, and their dynamic gives the film not only a dose of conflict, but also a beating heart. Be warned, I saw this film with a few friends and not a single eye remained dry at the end.

“Superbad” (2007)

“Superbad,” the quintessential 2000s raunchy comedy, may no longer represent the teenage experience (or at least I do). think (it's not a particularly provocative nearly 30-year-old), but it remains one of the most hilarious films ever made. Thanks to a killer cast of extremely funny actors including Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Seth Rogan (also co-writer) and Bill Hader, Superbad is the kind of movie you have to watch twice for the jokes come so extensively and quickly that you can't understand them the first time.

Like many coming-of-age comedies, “Superbad” is about two lovable losers trying their best to survive high school. Set in the days leading up to graduation, Seth (Hill) and Evan (Cera) are determined to end their school years on a high note. They hatch a master plan to get some alcohol before a big party, but as usual, almost everything goes wrong with hilarious results. Look for Emma Stone to play a supporting role in her film debut.

“Emilia Perez” (2024)

“Emilia Pérez” is described as a “crime musical,” which draws comparisons to plays like “Chicago,” and I expect fans of the latter will be thrilled by this Jacques Audiard film. I must confess that I didn't find the musical numbers particularly convincing – apart from a second act melody shot through with the kind of rage only a scorned lover can produce – but the three key performances from Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascó and Selena Gomez was more than captivating enough to keep me glued to the events on screen.

“Emilia Pérez” tells a rather unexpected story and sees how a lawyer named Rita (Saldaña) is recruited for a very secret job by a feared cartel boss (Gascón). Rita must help the criminal leader fake her death so they can transition into life as women and live their authentic lives. Years later, Rita returns to her orbit, and although the former gangster now lives as Emilia Pérez, the past is hard to shake, especially when her ex-wife (Gomez) is in the picture.
