Patriots' Jerod Mayo provides update and context on Drake Maye's injury

The New England Patriots celebrated their most exciting win of the season on Sunday by defeating the New York Jets 25-22. The hero of the day was Jacoby Brissett, who led the offense with a game-winning touchdown drive in the final two minutes. It was a nice moment for the veteran quarterback, who stepped in when Drake Maye had to leave the game with a head injury.

As beautiful as the moment was, Maye is still the future of the franchise and fans were eagerly awaiting an update on his status. Monday brought one such update from head coach Jerod Mayo.

In a weekly interview on WEEI, Mayo revealed that Maye is in the NFL concussion protocol after suffering a blow to the head against the Jets. This isn't surprising news after the young quarterback was sidelined with a head injury during the game, but it still serves as confirmation. That means Maye will be out until he recovers from his concussion and passes protocol.

Additionally, Maye gave some background on how it went down.

“I was surprised when (coach Jim Whalen) told me he had to go to the medical tent because he threw some good balls after that,” Mayo said. “I thought he was still pretty astute in that regard. But it’s obviously above my pay grade to take him out of the game and put him on the record.”

The head coach also noted that the call came from the league. It may be reassuring for fans to know that the NFL's additional concussion protections sometimes work. With staff training across the league placing a heavy emphasis on checking for concussions, the Patriots appear to have suffered one with Maye that wasn't necessarily obvious from the start.

Regardless, Maye will be sidelined until he clears concussion protocol and his status for New England's trip to Tennessee to face the Titans is officially uncertain.
