Patriots QB Drake Maye left the Jets game with a head injury caused by a helmet-to-helmet collision

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye left Sunday's game against the New York Jets with a head injury.

Head coach Jerod Mayo told CBs before halftime that Maye would not return to the game after Maye was initially listed as questionable with a head injury.

Maye was injured by a blow to the head in the second quarter. Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood was pursuing Maye in a scramble and made helmet-to-helmet contact on a hit from behind when Maye slipped.

The hit did not result in a penalty flag.

After the hit, Maye went to the medical tent and then to the Patriots locker room. Jacoby Brissett took over at quarterback on New England's next possession.

Maye completed three of six passes for 23 yards and ran for 46 yards and a touchdown before his injury. When he left the game, the Patriots had a 7-6 lead.

Maye was the No. 3 pick in the April draft out of North Carolina and started the season behind Brissett on the depth chart. The Patriots won their first game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but lost 4-1 with Brissett as the starting quarterback. Maye took over at quarterback and made his first NFL start in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.

In two starts and one relief appearance before Sunday's game against the Jets, Maye had completed 64.1% of his passes for 7.1 yards per attempt with five touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 68 rushing yards on 10 carries.
