Payton Pritchard wants the NBA to implement a new G League rule for Heaves

2 minutes, 36 seconds Read

Payton Pritchard's final improbable throw didn't count, but still, watching the Celtics guard take a deep look at the end of a quarter is must-see TV. This time, he made a three-quarter-range shot at the end of the third quarter in the Celtics' stunning win over the Wizards on Thursday. Of course, there was only 0.2 seconds left on the clock, so even if a jumper went in it couldn't count under NBA rules.

Pritchard was never afraid to make those shots, even though his shooting percentages were down. His greatest moment, of course, was when he hit the halfcourt buzzer-beater in Game 5 of the NBA Finals and sent the crowd into a frenzy. While many players are holding themselves back from making throws, there could be a new rule change to fix this.

This season there is a new experimental G League rule specifically for Heaves. Essentially, it wouldn't be a throw that affects a player's individual percentage, but rather a team field goal attempt. Certain criteria must be met, most notably that it must be a missed field goal in the last three seconds of the first three quarters of the game and that it must be made approximately 36 feet from the basket (a specific spot on the field). , and the play must take place in the backfield. Pritchard was a fan of the new rule.

“I think they should implement this in the NBA,” Pritchard said via CLNS Media. “I mean, it's a shot, obviously not a normal 3-point shot. Some people don't take it because it might hurt their percentages. I'm not worried about the percentage because it can change the dynamics of the game. But I don’t think that’s a bad rule.”

Pritchard said he doesn't practice these long-range shots, but just trusts he can do it. These throws became an important part of his game as he made the shot despite the odds. He added that if he makes it, even if it doesn't count, it can change the dynamic of the game, similar to Thursday's game.

Of course, Pritchard has heard a lot about his buzzer-beater in Game 5 against the Mavericks. But it wasn't just that particular shot, as he also hit some of those long-range shots last year during the regular season. And now it's just a part of his game that fans can expect from him. Aside from throws, he even had another idea when it comes to deep shots.

“I honestly think that maybe halfway through the court, they should think about adding it as a four-point game,” Pritchard said. “It could be interesting. I've seen rules abroad that have a four-point line. Honestly, I don't think we'll ever be able to do it. But if it's beyond half the court, make it a four-point game. I don't know. It’s interesting to think about.”
